The Provence - Arles
Europe - September 2002
In the center of Arles is a well preserved Roman Coloseum.  Not as large as the one in Rome, but still impressive. It is still in use.  During the summer you can watch Bullfights here.

Arles is famous from many pictures van Gogh painted while he was living here.  Many other famous artists have lived here, including Cezanne.
There is also a Roman arena / theater, still used for concerts. Of the stage backdrop only two columns remain.
One of the picturesque little side streets ending in a church squeezed between houses.
In this lovely cloister I took a picture of my favorite monk.
A wall of history, part of the medieval cloister. Originally probably a Roman building, built on through centuries, still in use as a school.
In front of the cloister musicians were playing with strange 11 string instruments.
More crumbling walls at the Roman baths.
Massive walls inside the coloseum.

At this square used to be the Roman Forum.  Only two colums remain, built in the building on the left.
Arles was occupied by the Germans during WW2. American soldiers came to rescue the town.  2 American pilots lost their lives.  The town of Arles erected this monument to thank these two men.
